What does HDMI stand for?

2025 07/30

HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a proprietary audio/video interface used to efficiently transmit uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data from HDMI source devices to a range of audio and video systems. Most modern systems can only be connected via HDMI cables. HDMI is used in commercial AV applications and is the recommended connection cable for home entertainment systems. Users can use this single-cable solution to conveniently connect devices such as game consoles and set-top boxes to a TV screen.

HDMI adapters and connector types
Basic cable connections require devices to have an HDMI port. However, there are many accessories available to customize HDMI connections and meet specific HDMI adapter requirements. For example, an adapter is needed when connecting portable HDMI devices with small ports. Adapters are also commonly used when connecting older electrical devices.

The correct adapter can convert the following connection types to HDMI:
DVI
VGA
DisplayPort
There are also many HDMI connection types, divided into male and female models, suitable for different environments. Most cables use HDMI Type A connectors, while other types of connectors are less common. For example, home entertainment systems, TVs, and computer monitors typically use HDMI Type A cables. Outdated HDMI connection types are gradually being phased out.
The HDMI interface is the standard interface for connecting audiovisual devices. Digital devices such as TVs and Blu-ray players typically have multiple ports that can connect various HDMI cables. When connecting devices, ensure that the HDMI cable is securely and safely connected.
