 HDMI 1.4 remains the most widely used standard today. HDMI 2.1 FRL is primarily found in high-end and gaming monitors, whereas for standard home and office monitors, HDMI 1.4 is still the dominant version among mainstream interfaces.
Therefore, it’s still quite necessary to take a closer look at HDMI 1.4 and gain a comprehensive understanding of it. Although this is a well-worn topic—or one we’re all too familiar with—do we truly have a thorough understanding of HDMI?
HDMI 1.4 Explained
The HDMI 1.4 standard was released in 2009 and served as a crucial “bridge” between earlier and later versions in the history of HDMI. At the time, it introduced several forward-looking features designed to meet the future needs of home entertainment.
Core Features and Details (7 Core Features)
1. Support for 4K Resolution (with Refresh Rate Limitations)
  > Specifications: This is one of the most notable features of HDMI 1.4. It introduced support for 3840×2160@30Hz and 4096×2160@24Hz resolutions for the first time.
   > Details and Limitations: The 30Hz/24Hz refresh rates are the main bottleneck. While sufficient for static images or movies, they can cause noticeable stuttering in games or fast-moving dynamic video. Since HDMI 1.4’s maximum bandwidth remains at 10.2 Gbps, it cannot support higher refresh rates at these high resolutions.
2. HDMI Ethernet Channel (no longer widely used; has been replaced by Wi-Fi)
   > Specifications: A dedicated Ethernet data channel is added to the interface, allowing networked devices to share an Internet connection via an HDMI cable without the need for a separate Ethernet cable.
   > Details: Both devices (such as a TV and a Blu-ray player) must support this feature (indicated by the “HEC” logo) and use an HDMI cable that supports the Ethernet channel. This feature is not widely used in practice and has since been replaced by other networking methods (such as Wi-Fi). To use it, both the source device and the cable must support the feature.
3. Audio Return Channel
   > Specifications: This is the most successful feature of HDMI 1.4 and remains in use today. It allows the TV to “upstream” digital audio signals back to an amplifier or soundbar via the HDMI cable already connecting the devices.
   > Details: Before ARC was introduced, an additional optical or coaxial audio cable was required to output audio from the TV to an audio system. ARC has completely simplified the wiring; users only need a single HDMI cable to connect the TV to the audio system. Audio from the TV’s built-in apps or from a game console connected to the TV can be transmitted back through this cable for playback on the audio system.
A: Historical Significance>>>From 2010 to 2015, HDMI 1.4 was the standard configuration for the vast majority of TVs, Blu-ray players, projectors, and computer graphics cards. Many of the “non-latest” devices you currently have at home are likely equipped with HDMI 1.4 ports.
B: Current Status>>> Since HDMI 2.0 (released in 2013, supporting 4K@60Hz) became the standard for mid-range and higher-end devices, HDMI 1.4 has gradually taken a back seat. For today’s 4K HDR content, high-frame-rate games (such as 4K@120Hz on the PS5 or Xbox Series X), and 8K video, HDMI 1.4’s bandwidth is completely insufficient.
C: How to Identify It>>> Devices are not usually labeled directly as “HDMI 1.4”; you’ll need to consult the product manual or official specifications. An indirect way to tell is this: if a 4K TV’s HDMI port is labeled as supporting only “HDMI with ARC” without mentioning “4K@60Hz” or “HDMI 2.0,” it is most likely version 1.4.
