HDMI vs DP Interface Complete Guide: Differences and Which Is Better

When you get a new computer, you will find two common ports on your graphics card: DP and HDMI. What are the differences between these two interfaces? Which one performs better? Today we will break this down in a beginner-friendly guide.

HDMI  Interface Origin Introduction

Released in 2002, HDMI  was jointly launched by an alliance of seven major TV manufacturers including Sony, Panasonic, and Philips to unify interface standards for home audio and video devices. Standard HDMI Cable for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. Most people simply call it a high-definition cable, featuring a flat trapezoidal port design.
The early HDMI Cable 1.0 version supported 1080P resolution and realized simultaneous audio and video transmission with a single cable. Compared with the old complicated RCA analog interfaces with messy wiring and low resolution, HDMI brought an overwhelming upgrade. Soon after, manufacturers like Sony quickly promoted High-Speed HDMI Cable to game consoles, home projectors, digital cameras and other devices. HDMI became the certified standard for digital products, dominating the signal cable industry. Relying on ecological bundling with major manufacturers, HDMI generates huge annual revenue from patent licensing fees.

DP Interface Origin & Introduction

In 2007, against the backdrop of expensive HDMI patent fees and outdated VGA and DVI interfaces failing to meet the growing demand for high-bandwidth transmission, the DP interface was born. Developed by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) and strongly supported by Intel, AMD, Apple, Dell and other PC manufacturers, DP stands for DisplayPort.
Objectively speaking, the Displayport Adapter Cable interface has an asymmetrical design, which is less user-friendly than HDMI. It is often tricky to align and plug in correctly when the interface is against the ground or hidden behind the computer. However, DP boasts amazing performance. The early DP 1.0 already matched the bandwidth level of HDMI 1.3 at that time, supporting 2K resolution. In 2009, DP 1.2 was released, stably supporting 4K 60Hz transmission. In contrast, HDMI only managed to support 4K 60Hz until the launch of its 2.0 version in 2013.
Another core advantage of DP is free authorization with no patent fees. This benefit attracted massive support from PC manufacturers. Many advanced technologies were first applied on DP interfaces, including VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) adaptive refresh technology, MST multi-device daisy chain splicing technology, and DSC display compression technology. These features were only gradually adopted by HDMI later on. Relying on its free authorization and powerful performance, DP successfully broke HDMI’s market monopoly.
