Given the stringent demands on transmission quality, HDMI certification guarantees the communication integrity of products. Devices bearing legitimate HDMI certification ensure both signal quality and compliance with industry standards. Furthermore, HDMI certification is a mandatory patent-enforced requirement. Any product utilizing HDMI technology (via HDMI ports) incorporates patented HDMI innovations. Manufacturers must obtain certification and licensing from the HDMI Licensing LLC to use these technologies; otherwise, such use constitutes infringement.
With the release of HDMI 2.0/2.1 and the advent of 4K and 8K high-definition displays, the HDMI Council has implemented increasingly stringent intellectual property protections. It has even established a dedicated anti-counterfeiting center in the Asia-Pacific region to assist members in securing more market orders and maintaining the quality assurance of certified products. The Council imposes clear requirements on product packaging, promotional materials, advertising labeling, and usage scenarios, mandating consistent terminology and graphics to prevent unintentional or deliberate consumer confusion.
The HDMI Association employs several methods for trademark protection:
First, market spot checks—randomly sampling HDMI products in the market to verify HDMI certification. Websites like Amazon, AliExpress, and Global Sources, which sell HDMI cables, are now subject to these market inspections. The association requires these platforms to remove uncertified products from their listings, and relevant websites have already bulk-delisted links for non-certified items.
Second, establishing customs oversight departments. HDMI products must present valid HDMI certification to clear customs. Shipments lacking HDMI certification will be seized at customs, with entire batches destroyed and owners facing substantial fines.
Third, on-site exhibition audits are being implemented. Exhibitors displaying unauthorized HDMI products at trade shows risk fines and removal from the venue. Overseas exhibitions enforce particularly strict controls, posing significant risks from the HDMI Association. Logo Requirements:
The HDMI Association has published the HDMI Trademark Usage Guidelines (ATLUGs), which specify requirements for HDMI trademark color, size, version identification, and usage scenarios. For example, the HDMI logo height must be no less than 3mm, but in special cases like ports or cables, the height can be reduced to a minimum of 1.5mm. For online applications, the HDMI logo width must be 30 pixels or larger.
