HDMI 2.2 raises maximum bandwidth from HDMI 2.1’s 48 Gbps to 96 Gbps. Without compression, it supports 4K 240Hz and 8K 60Hz. With DSC compression enabled, it achieves up to 4K 480Hz, 8K 240Hz and even 16K 60Hz.
Important purchasing note to avoid pitfalls
HDMI 2.2 does not guarantee full 96 Gbps speeds. Manufacturers can choose from three bandwidth tiers: 64 Gbps, 80 Gbps and 96 Gbps. Is It Time to Upgrade?
Current hardware ecosystem status
  1. Graphics Cards: AMD’s next-gen flagship GPUs (rumored RDNA 5) will HDMI Adapter Cable 2.2, initially supporting 64 Gbps and 80 Gbps models. NVIDIA is widely expected to follow, unlocking the potential of future high-refresh gaming monitors.
  2. Game Consoles: PS5 and Xbox Series X peak at 4K 120Hz, easily covered by HDMI 2.1. The Switch 2 tops out at 4K 60Hz. Native HDMI 2.2 support will likely arrive with the PS6 and next-generation Xbox.
  3. Streaming Content: Major platforms including Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+ max out at 4K HDR, while 8K media remains scarce. 12K and 16K content stays limited to professional film and VR sectors, far from regular household use.
Chipmakers will deliver the first batch of FRL2 chips this year. Based on industry development cycles, mainstream flagship HDMI 2.2 televisions will not hit the market until early 2027.
 
For competitive gamers, tiny audio-video desync can alter match results. Many users attribute lag to networks or monitors, overlooking delays caused by signal transmission. When running high-resolution, high-framerate content, HDMI 2.1 lacks sufficient bandwidth headroom, creating timing gaps between audio and video streams. HDMI 2.2 optimizes signal scheduling and aligns audio and video timestamps at the transmission layer to reduce desync.
